The Helena May was a gracious building established in 1916 by Lady Helena May, the wife of the Governor, Sir Henry May. She built this building aiming to promote the welfare of women and girls in Hong Kong. It still serves its original purpose as both a heritage site and an accommodation.
During this trip, we have learnt a lot about the Helena May. We were fascinated with the fantasy-like building—it is such a tranquil place, like a fairyland away from the city, a place where mind and spirit can make a moment of peace. During the visit, we were asked a meaningful question: ‘Should we bring down a place like Helena May to build hotels or commercial buildings for the economy?’ The answer is apparent after the tour.
A historical heritage like the Helena May is certainly more important than hotels or commercial buildings. Heritages witness the times we had not seen; it itself proves and tells the past, marks our own identity and culture.
