Music has always held a special place in the hearts of many generations of students at Belilios Public School (BPS). The well-established music education programme at BPS allows budding musicians to develop their talents and builds a strong sisterhood that continues after graduation. By participating in local and international music festivals, students have the opportunities to further enhance their musicality and share their passion for music with audiences.
With the support of the Belilios Old Girls Foundation, our 38-member Symphony Orchestra travelled to Bratislava, Slovakia, to compete at the 8th International Youth Music Festival II from 24 July to 27 July 2023. They received the Gold Band Award for their brilliant performances of classical and contemporary concert pieces written by Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns, Deborah Henson-Conant and Leroy Anderson. Besides performing in the competition, students also took part in a music-themed guided tour and enjoyed the sights and sounds of famous attractions in Vienna, Hallstatt and Salzburg. Their attendance at classical music concerts performed by professional orchestras in magnificent venues have certainly inspired them to elevate their musicianship to the next level.
The members of the Symphony Orchestra continued their practice after their return to Hong Kong as they wanted to share their music and happiness with their schoolmates in the school hall. On 6 September 2023, the Symphony Orchestra received rounds of applause after performing to the entire school in their concert dresses during the morning assembly. WONG Tsz-yau Miyu, concert mistress and violin soloist of the orchestra, also shared her experience from the tour.
